WITHOUT RENT CONTROL, SASK. ONLY PROVINCE IN CANADA TO SEE AVERAGE RENT COSTS HIKED

SASKATOON – The cost of rent is again on the rise in Saskatchewan, while decreasing in every other province in Canada.

According to the August 2025 Rentals.ca Rent Report, rent costs are up 2.9 per cent in Saskatchewan.
Rents became more affordable in every other Canadian province and dropped in price by 3.7 per cent nationally.
“We’re hearing from seniors, young families and so many others who have had their rent jacked up by 20, even 30 per cent in one year,” said April ChiefCalf, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Housing.
“Without some form of rent control, big corporate landlords – often headquartered in Alberta – will keep jacking up rents 30 per cent on Saskatchewan seniors. That shouldn’t be allowed to happen.
“It is time to build a future where hardworking people in our province don't need to break the bank just to afford a month’s rent.”
British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and even Doug Ford’s Ontario have already implemented rent control measures to protect tenants and maintain housing affordability.
The Saskatchewan NDP is collecting public input as it prepares to draft and introduce legislation this fall to get the skyrocketing cost of rent under control in the province, especially for young people and seniors.
