When Scott Moe took office in 2018, average tuition was $7,257 per year. Today, students are paying on average $9,863 annually.
“A post-secondary education is becoming less attainable for young people in this province at a time when we need an educated workforce more than ever,” said Tajinder Grewal, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Advanced Education. “Instead of investing in our kids’ futures, Scott Moe’s government is saddling them with crushing debt.”
This fall the University of Saskatchewan increased tuition by 3.8 per cent and the University of Regina by 4 per cent largely on account of provincial funding cuts and the government's refusal to commit to a new four-year funding agreement despite calls from post-secondary institutions.
“We need more healthcare workers, more teachers, more police, and more skilled workers for in-demand trades,” Grewal said. “After 18 years of the Sask. Party, we aren’t training up the people we need to move our economy forward.”
As part of its advocacy work on behalf of students, Saskatchewan NDP MLAs and volunteers are going door-to-door with a petition calling for Saskatchewan tuition to be lowered.
