SCOTT MOE SHUFFLES THE DECK CHAIRS ON THE TITANIC

REGINA – Today, Premier Scott Moe shuffled and expanded his cabinet in a clear sign that, after 18 years in power, the Sask. Party is focused on infighting and failing to deliver on the issues that matter most to the people of Saskatchewan.

“Scott Moe is shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. Let’s call it what it is,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader. “After 18 years in power, this government is out of touch, out of ideas, and struggling to get the basics right.
“Hardworking families are getting taxed to death, healthcare workers are leaving in droves, crime is out of control, and the Sask. Party is just shuffling the deck chairs.
“We certainly need change in the province — this isn’t it.”
Finance Minister Jim Reiter’s load has been lightened; Reiter was stripped of the Immigration and Career Training portfolio as he struggles to manage the province’s finances, going from a surplus at budget time to a nearly $500 million deficit.
After a chaotic and ineffective wildfire response, Tim McLeod has been stripped of the public safety portfolio. McLeod has also struggled to get crime under control, as Saskatchewan continues to see the worst crime severity in Canada, according to Statistics Canada.
Daryl Harrison has been kicked out of cabinet. Harrison’s short term as Agriculture Minister was defined early by his “bizarre” denial of illegal foreign farmland ownership. Producers and agriculture groups like the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan continue to call for action on the issue.
Cockrill and Carr remain in charge of the province’s crumbling healthcare system in an apparent signal that Moe is somehow satisfied with their work on the file.
In an attempt to manage his increasingly fractious caucus, Moe has also created eight new Legislative Secretary jobs for backbenchers who did not make the starting lineup. The government previously had no Legislative Secretaries.
“Some of the faces may have changed, but it’s still Scott Moe and the same-old Sask. Party,” said Beck.
“We can’t get this province moving forward with the same-old Sask. Party. We’ll need a real change in government to have a bright future.”
