SCOTT MOE’S OWN BUDGET UNDERMINES REPEATED CLAIMS OF AFFORDABLE LIVING IN SASKATCHEWAN

Bad News Budget Shows Saskatchewan Families Paying More Taxes than Families in Vancouver
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe’s repeated claims that Saskatchewan is being made affordable by his Sask. Party Government, pointing to documents in his own budget that show people here pay more taxes than those living in Vancouver.
“For months, Scott Moe has been repeating his claim that Saskatchewan is the most affordable place to live, all while Saskatchewan residents pay more in taxes and power bills than in Vancouver,” said Sally Housser, Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources. “Maybe he forgot to read his own budget — or maybe this is just more Sask. Party math.”

A family of four in Saskatchewan making $75,000 a year is paying over $1,100 more annually in provincial taxes and electricity than the same family in Vancouver, according to the Sask. Party’s own budget page 61-62.

Moe has rejected calls to reverse his $136-million rate hike on power bills and another planned for car insurance. The Sask. Party also continues to pile on $25 million annually in taxes on groceries and another $20 million in taxes on kids’ clothing.

New data released by Angus Reid also shows that 82 per cent of Saskatchewan people are either financially worse off compared to last year or feel that they are spinning their tires. Only 18 per cent report being better off financially compared to a year ago.

“You need it and the Sask. Party taxes it,” said Trent Wotherspoon, Shadow Finance Minister Wotherspoon. “Every day, Scott Moe stands and touts his budget as being focused on affordability while families pay more in taxes and for power than those living in Vancouver — yes, Vancouver.”

Carla Beck’s team continues to call on Moe to:

·         Stop the rate hikes for power and car insurance
·         Remove taxes on groceries and kids’ clothing
·         Temporarily suspend the 15-cent-per-litre fuel tax as the conflict in the Middle East has driven prices over $1.70 in recent days.
·         Pass The Rent Control Act introduced by MLA April ChiefCalf
·         End provincial cost downloading onto municipal governments, which drives up property taxes.
