ANOTHER REPORT SHOWS SCOTT MOE’S COAL CATASTROPHE WILL COST BILLIONS MORE THAN PROMISED, DRIVE UP RATES

Report: "The Return To Coal Is Both the Most Expensive Option For Ratepayers And The Most Expensive Option For Saskatchewan's Energy Future."
REGINA – Today the Pembina Institute released a new report finding that the Scott Moe’s coal plan could cost up to $32 billion and drive up power rates for Saskatchewan families.

“Scott Moe and Jeremy Harrison lied when they said their plan would only cost $2.6 billion,” said Jared Clarke, Shadow Minister for the Environment. “We’ve been saying for months that the Sask. Party’s coal plan is the most expensive option available and that it will drive costs for families, farms and small businesses through the roof. This is just the latest independent report that backs that up”

The researchers found “the return to coal is both the most expensive option for ratepayers and the most expensive option for Saskatchewan’s energy future” and estimated that the cost of replacing coal with natural gas or with renewables is significantly lower than rebuilding existing coal plants.

The report also highlighted that continued use of coal for power generation will lead to significant health impacts for people, creating an additional $160 million in costs to the healthcare system.

“The Sask. Party government has refused to listen to the evidence, and ignored report after report that shows their coal plan is on the wrong track,” said Clarke. “The only way to stop the Sask. Party’s catastrophic plan to double power bills by doubling down on coal is to change the government. It’s time for change.”
