SCOTT MOE’S GAS TAX COSTS RURAL SASKATCHEWAN HOUSEHOLDS $750 PER YEAR

Premier Has Repeatedly Blocked Attempts To Suspend Gas Tax During Price Surge At Pumps
REGINA – Saskatchewan families will continue to shell out hundreds of dollars each to cover Scott Moe’s gas tax as he’s repeatedly resisted calls to suspend it while prices at the pump surge to $1.70 per litre.

Analysis by Carla Beck’s team shows that, on an annualized basis, the Moe fuel tax costs urban families — who log 44,000 kilometres of driving — about $600 per year and those in rural Saskatchewan — who rack up 54,000 kilometres on the open road — about $750.

“That’s more than $700 per year that could be going back into the pocket of Saskatchewan families,” said Trent Wotherspoon, Shadow Finance Minister. “People can’t take all these cost hikes. The Premier hikes power rates and downloads costs that drive up property taxes.

“He taxes groceries and kids’ clothing, and now, even as he takes in unplanned, windfall revenues from high oil prices driven up by the conflict in the Middle East, he refuses to give some of that money back in the form of relief at the pumps.

“Enough is enough. This Premier is out of touch with the cost-of-living challenges facing Saskatchewan people — or he couldn’t care less about the cost-of-living hardship families face.”

Wotherspoon introduced a motion in the Legislature Tuesday to temporarily suspend the gas tax until prices return to a more normal level — it was the exact same motion he brought forward in March. In both instances, Scott Moe and his MLAs used their majority to block the motion from being debated.

Wotherspoon’s actions came as the federal government suspended its own fuel tax Wednesday until Labour Day.

“If we combine that with cutting the fuel tax here, it would save drivers 25 cents on every litre of fuel,” Wotherspoon said. “That’s not going to solve all of the challenges people are facing to make ends meet, but it sure is a good start.”
