160 BLANK PAGES: IGNORANT SASK. PARTY HIDES INFORMATION ON STATE OF CRUMBLING SCHOOLS

Wednesday Marks First Day Of School For Many Saskatchewan Students

SASKATOON — Saskatchewan families and school divisions deserve answers about the condition of their schools, but the Sask. Party government has once again chosen secrecy over transparency, returning 160 blank pages in response to a Freedom of Information request seeking information about the state of school buildings across Saskatchewan.

Speaking to media from an empty field in Brighton, where a new school was promised to families in 2024 but never built. Families began moving into this neighbourhood 13 years ago. Shadow Minister for Education Matt Love said school divisions across the province are struggling to understand how decisions are made about which schools receive upgrades, renovations, new portables or other critical infrastructure investments.

“One hundred and sixty blank pages. That’s what families and school divisions got when they asked their government for information about the state of Saskatchewan’s schools,” said Matt Love, Shadow Minister for Education. “This government is running from accountability at every turn, and families deserve better.”

School divisions should not have to guess what criteria the province uses to determine which schools make it onto infrastructure lists, when portables will be approved, or which buildings will receive critical upgrades. Yet the government insists on keeping this process a secret.

The lack of transparency makes it harder for school divisions to plan for growing enrolment, address aging infrastructure, and provide safe, appropriate learning environments for students and staff.

“If the government has a fair and transparent process for deciding which schools get upgrades and which don't, then why won't they show Saskatchewan people what that process is and where schools currently stand?” Love said. “School divisions shouldn't have to beg for information or compete in the dark just to understand how decisions are being made about their schools.”

Carla Beck's team is calling on the government to release the information requested through the FOI process, publish clear criteria for school capital investments and provide school divisions with a transparent process for accessing funding for upgrades, renovations and portables.

“Saskatchewan students deserve better than 160 blank pages,” Love said.
