The Premier had once called for the EV tariffs to be scrapped, only to immediately
change his position after returning from a hastily planned two days in China and downplay the impact of the EV tariffs.
In an exclusive interview with CTV, the Chinese Ambassador to Canada made clear that the Chinese EV tariffs imposed by Ottawa prompted retaliatory tariffs on canola, peas and pork, and that they should be removed to protect Saskatchewan producers.
This prompted a direct response from Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, who called for the EV tariffs to be removed. Premier Moe did not.
“The job of the Premier of Saskatchewan is to stand up for our province,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Jobs and the Economy.
“Scott Moe’s flip flop on trade, on Chinese EVs is a betrayal of Saskatchewan producers. This is one of the most important issues facing our ag sector and our economy right now. We deserve to know exactly where the Premier stands on it.”
Statistics Canada reported earlier this month that merchandise exports from Saskatchewan to China have fallen off a cliff, dropping 35.8 per cent year-to-date and dropping 76.5 per cent in August 2025 when compared with August 2024.
“Closed canola crush plants, closed farms, and hundreds of job losses will be the legacy of this Premier if he doesn’t start advocating for our canola producers,” said Young.
“Our farms feed the world. It should be simple for the Sask Party the stand up for them.”
