Leaked SaskPower Documents Revealed $26 Billion Cost
YORKTON – Carla Beck’s team is demanding Yorkton MLA David Chan be honest with his constituents as to why he stood with Scott Moe and Sask. Party Minister Jeremy Harrison after he lied and downplayed the cost of the Sask. Party’s $26-billion coal plan.
SCOTT MOE’S CATASTROPHIC COAL PLAN WILL COST YORKTON PEOPLE FOR GENERATIONS
“The people of Yorkton and across Saskatchewan deserve transparency about the true cost of Scott Moe’s coal plan — and they do not deserve to foot the massive $26-billion bill that comes with it,” Beck said.
Leaked SaskPower documents reveal the true projected cost of refurbishing coal plants — a figure 10 times higher than what the government has publicly claimed.
“This premier and his minister have been hiding the truth from the people of Yorkton and across Saskatchewan the whole time,” said Brittney Senger, Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Saskatoon Southeast.
Leaked SaskPower documents, tabled in the Legislature by Beck during budget estimates, show the government’s coal plan includes:
· $11.4 billion in capital costs
· $13 billion in fuel costs
· $1.4 billion to rebuild outdated transmission infrastructure
The total cost is staggering when compared to Saskatchewan’s annual provincial budget of $22.2 billion, and the province’s total accumulated debt of roughly $44 billion since 1905.
Yorkton already is feeling the impact of Sask. Party mismanagement as Statistics Canada shows that the Yorkton Melville area saw its employment fall by 2,400 in the month of April.
The government blocked a motion put forth by Beck’s team to release all documents regarding the costs SaskPower is facing in relation to the Sask. Party’s coal plan.
“Why is it that the people of Saskatchewan have to learn the truths behind this government’s plan through leaked documents?” said Senger. “Yorkton deserves an MLA and a government that is honest and focused on making life more affordable.
“It's time for this government to stop hiding billions of dollars in SaskPower debt.”
“Clearly, it's time for change.”
