Sask. Party Has Failed To Deliver Long-Needed New Hospital, Despite Promising It For Years
YORKTON – Carla Beck’s team is sounding the alarm after the Scott Moe government refused to release a single word of an 840-page study into the condition of the Yorkton Hospital.
SCOTT MOE HIDES STUDY INTO STATE OF YORKTON HOSPITAL
“For 20 years, the Sask. Party has dragged their feet on building Yorkton a new hospital — now they’re hiding just how bad the condition of the current hospital is,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP Jobs & Economy Shadow Minister.
“People here are sick and tired of political games, delays and broken promises. They just want a government and a local MLA that will stick to their word and deliver on the things people care most about.”
The Official Opposition submitted a freedom of information request to the Ministry of Health for studies on the replacement or renovation of the Yorkton Regional Health Centre.
The Ministry replied saying it would be withholding the 840 pages matching the description on the grounds of cabinet confidentiality.
Community and healthcare leaders have told the Saskatchewan NDP that Yorkton's hospital is long overdue for a replacement — the emergency room is too small, acute care rooms are overcrowded, and there aren’t enough pediatric, cancer or mental health spaces.
“We’re ready to build — not just a hospital, but the necessary infrastructure to staff it,” said Jared Clark, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Rural & Remote Health. “The Sask. Party hasn’t kept their word, and they are doing everything they can to walk back this promise. That’s the only good explanation for them hiding these documents.
“Yorkton is a city with so much potential and it's time for a change.”
Talks on replacing the hospital began in 2011 with conceptual plans presented to the public in 2012. Thirteen years later, the Minister of Health told media the project is still in the “scoping portion” but made no commitment to begin construction.
In July 2025, the government announced $1 million to develop a business case – another step in a long series of delays.
Carla Beck and her team have pledged to make actual construction of the Yorkton Hospital a priority if she is elected to form the next Saskatchewan Government.
