REGINA OVERDOSE NUMBERS SHOW GOVERNMENT FAILURE ON MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS CRISIS

REGINA — New data from the Regina Police Service shows the devastating toll of the overdose crisis that continues to be felt in communities across Regina, with 705 overdose events recorded in July alone and five people losing their lives.

The July figures include 47 incidents attended by police and nine instances where police administered naloxone. The data paints a stark picture of a crisis that continues to put lives at risk and place enormous pressure on first responders.

“These are not just statistics on a page. These are parents, children, siblings, friends and neighbours whose lives have changed forever,” said Leroy Laliberte, Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Addictions. “Five people died from an apparent overdose in Regina last month. Hundreds survived an overdose. Every single one represents a person who needs support, treatment and a pathway to recovery.”

Carla Beck's team is calling on the Scott Moe government to take a comprehensive approach to the overdose crisis, including expanding access to addictions treatment, mental health services, harm-reduction supports and long-term recovery programs.

Families should not have to wait until their loved one is in crisis—or worse, until it is too late—to get help.

“First responders are being asked to pick up the pieces of this crisis,” said Nicole Sarauer, Shadow Minister for Community Safety, “Saskatchewan needs a government that treats addiction with the respect that it deserves and makes sure people can get help when they need it.”
