New Documents Deepen Concerns About Sask. Party Secrecy, Rising power costs
REGINA — After more than 250 days of stonewalling, Carla Beck’s team has forced the release of internal SaskPower documents tied to the government’s $26-billion coal plan.
SCOTT MOE HIDES PAPER TRAIL FOR $26-BILLION COAL CATASTROPHE
What was actually released raises more questions than it answers.
Fifteen hundred pages were released, yet nearly all information was redacted. The records include cost modelling comparing different power generation options. Much of the underlying data has been stripped away. Tables and assumptions are redacted throughout, including sections dealing with capital costs, operating assumptions and long-term projections.
In many cases, entire sections are simply gone.
“What the documents do show is this — Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are building their disastrous coal strategy behind closed doors, relying on internal analysis, backroom emails and consultant reports the public is not allowed to fully see,” said Aleana Young, Shadow Minister for Jobs, Economy & SaskPower.
“They can’t tell you the details, but they’re ready to send you the bill. After nearly two decades in office, this government thinks it can keep people in the dark and get away with it.
“That kind of disrespect tells you everything about what the Sask. Party thinks of the people they expect to pay for this catastrophic plan.”
Internal documents presented to the SaskPower board and verified by the Minister and officials prove that the Sask. Party plans to spend over $26 billion on their costly scheme to retrofit Saskatchewan’s aging coal plants.
Industry was already sounding the alarm over Moe’s $136-million power rate hike before the true cost of coal was ever revealed. In a submission to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel, the Saskatchewan Industrial Energy Consumer Association warned that limited disclosure and the absence of clear cost information are undermining investment confidence and long-term planning.
“When the details are kept hidden, investors look elsewhere,” Young said. “Uncertainty makes it harder to plan and invest. That has real and potentially devastating consequences for Saskatchewan’s economy.
“It’s time for a change.”
Over the weekend and on Monday, Beck’s team was out across Saskatchewan talking to people about the disastrous coal plan.
“The bottom line is this — this coal plan will bury us in debt or massive rate hikes,” said Sally Housser, Shadow Minister for Energy & Resources, who was in Moose Jaw Monday morning. “We will pay for this now and for generations to come. Investment will flee, jobs will be lost and more.
“I am calling on every MLA in the Sask. Party — and specifically Megan Patterson and Tim McLeod here in Moose Jaw — to take a stand against Moe and this plan that we simply cannot afford.
“This is Saskatchewan’s future we’re talking about.”
Carla Beck’s team is calling on the Sask. Party government to release the full, unredacted analysis, assumptions, and consultant reports used to justify the Sask. Party’s costly coal plan.
