Instead, as Saskatchewan merchandise exports to China plummeted, Moe insisted it was Ottawa’s responsibility to lobby Beijing. Only under mounting pressure from canola producers did Moe scramble to organize a last-minute trip that produced no results.
“Instead of getting ahead of this months ago, they slapped together this last-minute trip in a matter of days and now we see the results — nothing, nada — as expected,” said Kim Breckner, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Trade & Export Development.
According to Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan merchandise exports were down 21.1 per cent in July. Year-to-date, Saskatchewan exports to China have fallen 28.8 per cent, and by 48.5 per cent comparing July 2024 to July 2025.
“Farmers and producers don’t need excuses or political theatre — they need results. Saskatchewan deserves a Premier who leads from the front, not someone who shows up late and comes home empty-handed,” Breckner said.
“Canola is key to the future of our economy,” she added.
