SASKATCHEWAN WORST IN CANADA FOR FIREARM VIOLENCE: STATS CAN

Scott Moe’s Bad News Budget Spends Three Times The Amount on Debt Servicing As It Does On Policing
SASKATOON – Carla Beck’s team is raising the alarm following new data from Statistics Canada showing Saskatchewan now has the highest rate of firearm-related crime of any province in Canada.
The new data released Tuesday reports 670 firearm-related incidents in Saskatchewan’s cities in 2024 — a rate of 120.1 incidents per 100,000 people. That far exceeds rates in Manitoba (81.3) and Alberta (49.3).

“This is a deeply troubling distinction that no province should hope to hold,” said Hugh Gordon, Associate Shadow Minister for Community Safety.

“Families across Saskatchewan deserve to feel safe in their communities, yet these numbers point to a government that is failing to address rising rates of crime.”

In addition to gun-related violence, Saskatchewan has the worst crime severity in Canada. Statistics Canada registered the Crime Severity Index in Saskatchewan for 2024 at a staggering 153.9, nearly double the national average (77.9) and two-and-a-half times the numbers for provinces like Ontario and Quebec.

Saskatchewan also reports the highest rate of interpersonal violence, and it too has risen dramatically since Moe became Premier.

Scott Moe’s bad news budget plans to spend three times more money servicing Scott Moe’s record debt than on policing in Saskatchewan.

“For years, we’ve seen crime get worse in our communities — and this government has failed to act,” said Matt Love, Saskatchewan NDP Caucus Chair.

“We used to be the place where you kept your doors unlocked. Now, people don’t feel safe downtown or in their own communities after dark.”

“It’s time for real action to make our streets safer. It’s time for change.”
