SASKATCHEWAN RENTS UP AGAIN WHILE NATIONALLY RATES DROP

Rent Control Needed Now: NDP
REGINA – As rents across Canada drop 3.2 per cent and are lower than two years ago, rent prices in Saskatchewan are up again in October, according to the latest report from Rentals.ca.
Saskatchewan had the second-highest increase in Canada — the Saskatchewan NDP says the rise is even further evidence of the need for rent control.
“Nearly everywhere else, people are getting a break on rent — but here in Saskatchewan, they just keep climbing,” said April ChiefCalf, NDP Shadow Minister for Housing.
“The Sask. Party is sitting on its hands as big corporate landlords in Alberta jack up rents on seniors and our young people.
“It’s driving families out of their homes.”
Six provinces — British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick — have already implemented some form of rent control to protect tenants and keep rents affordable.
The Saskatchewan NDP plans to introduce rent control legislation in the coming session and is welcoming input from the people of Saskatchewan.
