SASKATCHEWAN NDP WARNS NEW SASK. PARTY ENERGY PLAN INCLUDES PRIVATIZATION OF SASKPOWER

NDP Demanding Minister Clarify Why the Plan Includes a ‘Governance & Ownership Review’

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is warning that the Sask. Party’s so-called Saskatchewan First Energy Security Strategy and Supply Plan includes an investigation into privatizing SaskPower and its subsidiaries.

Page 7 of the report states that the Government of Saskatchewan will “conduct a governance review to determine the optimal provincial structure and mandate of nuclear power ownership, operation, and deployment within and beyond the provincial electrical grid.”
“For 18 years the Sask. Party has politicized SaskPower. Anytime they start talking about ownership, I get nervous. We’ve seen this story before. ‘Reviewing power ownership’ – that's code for privatization,” said Aleana Young, NDP Shadow Minister for SaskPower.
“I think taxpayers deserve to know more. Jeremy Harrison needs to come clean on this.”
The government’s so-called energy strategy claims to spend billions of taxpayer dollars to extend the life of Saskatchewan’s aging coal plants for, at best, a few years more.
“The Sask. Party has had 18 years to build out our grid, 18 years to generate more electricity in Saskatchewan to keep the lights on, attract new industry and grow the economy. They’ve sat on their hands.”
“Now they come up with a back-of-a-napkin plan, with no real timelines, budget estimates, or information about who’s working, where, or how we’ll pay for it. What they do talk about is privatization. They need to come clean and explain exactly who they’re already talking to sell off SaskPower or its subsidiaries,” said Young.
Later this fall the NDP will release an alternative to the Sask. Party’s so-called plan.
Young said the ‘Grid and Growth Plan’ will lay out a solution that evaluates a mix of energy alternatives, including renewables, nuclear, and natural gas generation. The NDP will also explore and evaluate the business case for large-scale nuclear generation.
