SASKATCHEWAN NDP TAKES STAND AGAINST SASKPOWER FIASCO THAT WILL COST TAXPAYERS $800 MILLION

Financial Anxiety Already Highest In All Of Canada Here, Families Can’t Afford Massive Rate Hike On Power Bills: Sarauer
REGINA - On behalf of people already struggling to make ends meet, the Saskatchewan NDP has voted in the legislature against a report that allows Scott Moe and his ministers to spend more than $800 million in taxpayer money to dig out of a massive financial hole they’ve dug in SaskPower.
The billion dollars of public money to cover this financial mismanagement will come from the people of Saskatchewan — likely through a massive hike on their power bills.
“We’re not going to stand by while Scott Moe and his Ministers hammer household budgets over and over,” said Nicole Sarauer, Saskatchewan NDP House Leader. “We’re going to do what we can to protect families who are stacking on debt and emptying their savings just to put food on the kitchen table.”
The vote from the Saskatchewan NDP comes less than a day after the Sask. Party Minister responsible for driving SaskPower’s finances into the ground, Jeremy Harrison, refused to turn up at a committee to answer questions about his mismanagement. The Saskatchewan NDP is not aware of another cover up in the provincial legislature of this magnitude.
“The Minister is scared because he knows just how bad he’s failed working families,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP SaskPower Shadow Minister. “The level of incompetence is staggering. Now, families are facing even more financial stress just to keep the lights on and their homes heated in these cold winter months.”
Young called for Minister Harrison to work with the legislative committee to book a proper meeting to discuss SaskPower’s books — on Tuesday night, Sask. Party MLAs Brad Crassweller from White City Qu’Appelle, Terri Bromm from Carrot River Valley and Chris Beaudry from Kelvington-Wadena shot down a motion to reschedule the meeting to accommodate the Minister’s schedule.
“This is a Sask. Party cover up of the highest order — and it it’s desperate,” Young said. “This is money that belongs to the people of Saskatchewan, not Scott Moe, not Jeremy Harrison and not their shamefaced rookie MLAs who would rather fall in line behind their failed leaders than stand up for their struggling constituents.”
