SASKATCHEWAN NDP STANDS WITH UKRAINE, CONDEMNS COMMENTS BY TRUMP

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck, Saskatoon Churchill-Wildwood MLA Keith Jorgenson and Saskatoon Southeast MLA Brittney Senger issued the following statement in response to comments made by Donald Trump about Ukraine and the tone-deaf response from Premier Scott Moe: 

 “The Saskatchewan NDP stands with the people of Ukraine and condemns the Russian invasion of their sovereign land – as we have done for three years. 

We opened our homes, our businesses with open arms. This is family, Saskatchewan will always be a welcome home to the Ukrainian people. 

As President Trump repeats Russian propaganda and falsely accuses Ukraine of starting the war with Russia, we must stand up. We need to be clear and unequivocal in condemning and denouncing these lies. The people of Ukraine need us now more than ever. 

Yesterday, when questioned about Trump’s comments, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe downplayed concerns and said he didn’t take those words ‘literally.’ 

That’s not good enough – not when President Trump’s increased rhetoric towards Ukraine has been followed with concurrent action, as the United States negotiates with Russia to give them swaths of Ukrainian land while sidelining Ukrainian leadership. 

Ukrainians are fighting for their culture, for their traditions, for their values – values that bond our two nations. Canada doesn’t abandon its allies. We will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes. 

Today, we call on all Sask. Party MLAs to join us in standing with Ukrainian people and condemning the comments by President Trump.
