SASKATCHEWAN NDP DEMANDS ACTION TO REVERSE POST-SECONDARY LAYOFFS

Underfunding By Sask. Party Has Forced Sask Poly To Fire 128 Staff & Counting
SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan NDP is demanding emergency support funding to reverse mass layoffs in post-secondary schools and a formal commitment from the failing Sask. Party minister that no one else will lose their jobs.
It’s expected this morning that the Sask. Party will announce a new, multi-year funding deal with post-secondary schools — however, it comes after devastating layoffs. At Sask Polytechnic, for example, at least 128 people have lost their jobs in recent months.
“This agreement comes too late — especially with our future at stake,” said Tajinder Grewal, Saskatchewan NDP Advanced Education Shadow Minister.
“The minister failed to do his job for a year and people lost their jobs. The people working in these schools are educating and supporting our future leaders. It’s been 18 years of this Sask. Party government failing to support them.”
Grewal said he hoped to see emergency funding later today that could be immediately provided to schools to rehire people who have been laid off.
“We hear reports of more layoffs on the way too,” he said. “I want the Minister to commit here and now that he personally see to it that fired staff are rehired, and that no one else will lose their job after his announcement today.
“This is about Saskatchewan’s future — the future of our economy, our healthcare system and so much more.”
