SASK. PARTY STALLED FOR TOO LONG ON DEAL, DROVE CHILDCARE INTO LAST PLACE

Saskatchewan Has Had Fewest Available Childcare Spaces For Four Years & Counting
REGINA – Affordable childcare advocates, providers and the Saskatchewan NDP won’t be throwing a parade for the Sask. Party as it finally drags its heels to sign an expected deal with the federal government.
Several providers journeyed to the Legislature Thursday to continue to criticize Scott Moe and his government for inaction on such a critical issue for families, for affordability and the Saskatchewan economy.
“Any signatures now don’t make up for the last number of months of chaos childcare operators had to endure and we still don’t have clarity,” said Cara Werner, Executive Director of Southeast Childcare Now.
Melanie Bacon, Executive Director of Play & Discover Early Learning Centre, added: “Childcare centres today across this province need immediate assistance. They need emergency funding, and they need the wage grid that was promised for their employees. These issues haven’t just gone away.”
Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Childcare & Early Learning Joan Pratchler demanded an apology from Moe and the introduction of an emergency action plan to expand access to affordable childcare.
“Childcare makes life more affordable for families and it’s good for the economy,” Pratchler said. “There was so much anguish and pain for families, centres nearly closed and we didn’t add desperately need childcare spaces.
“Saskatchewan ranks dead last in Canada for affordable childcare spaces. In fact, we’ve been last for the past four years and that is unacceptable, especially at such a critical moment for our future — for our province.”
