Sask Party’s Broken Promises Leading To 130 Layoffs, Official Court Filings Show

Government’s Incompetence on Economy Spurs Lawsuit

REGINA - Saskatchewan NDP Jobs and Economy Shadow Minister Aleana Young is calling on the Sask. Party government to take responsibility for decisions that have jeopardized jobs in Martensville and Warman, as revealed in official court filings.

According to official court filings, on March 22, 2017, then-Environment Minister Scott Moe met with Shercom President Shane Olsen at the Legislature. After fires nearly destroyed Shercom’s plant the previous year, the company sought a stable business climate before investing millions rebuilding.

Moe, on behalf of former Premier Brad Wall, promised the Government of Saskatchewan would provide Shercom with (1) a long-term contract, (2) assurances of supply of used tires, and (3) a voice in the future of the tire recycling industry.

However, after becoming Premier, Moe and the Sask. Party broke their promise and awarded Shercom’s contract to California-based CRM, which hired former Sask. Party Finance Minister Kevin Doherty to lobby the Sask. Party government.

“It turns out, Scott Moe has been a major player in this tire fire all along,” said Young.

“He needs to be straight with Saskatchewan people, take responsibility, and bring these jobs back to Martensville and Warman.

“Saskatchewan workers and companies should come first, not big California businesses with political connections.”

According to the court records, Shercom has already laid off more than 50 workers and is set to cut 79 more jobs on Dec. 2 unless the Sask. Party government reverses its decision.
