SASK. PARTY REFUSES TO SUPPORT MOTION CALLING FOR END TO EV TARIFFS

SASK. PARTY AMENDMENT REVISIONIST HISTORY, MOE ALL OVER THE MAP ON EVs

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is calling out Premier Moe and the Sask. Party for refusing to stand up for canola producers and vote in support of a straightforward Opposition motion for the Premier to clearly and unequivocally call on the federal government to remove the Chinese electric vehicle tariffs.

The original text of the motion read:

That the Assembly calls upon the Premier to clearly and unequivocally call for the Government of Canada to immediately remove tariffs on electric vehicles from China to restore market access for canola, pea and pork producers in Saskatchewan

The Sask. Party amended the motion to falsely claim that Premier Scott Moe has been consistent on the issue of Chinese EV tariffs, revisionist history that the Saskatchewan NDP will not support.

On  September 15 in Saskatoon, Premier Moe was asked whether he hoped to see Canada lift the EV tariffs, and he responded saying:

The EV tariffs are on because we aligned with the United States of America, and so lifting the EV tariffs would most certainly impact the negotiations we have with the United States of America, which is our largest trading partner, in Saskatchewan and across Canada. So herein lies our effort to represent ourselves as a nation of Canada and we need to do so unapologetically, but we also need to understand that there’s a balance to be found between our largest trading partners around the world. And so it’s not as simple as lifting EV tariffs.

Again on September 16 in Ottawa, Premier Moe was asked if the Prime Minister is open to dropping the EV tariffs on China, and he again defended the tariffs:

I was quoted on this a while ago and I’d just clarify. It’s not as simple as that. Our trade relations that we have, again our largest trade partner is the United States of America, which we’ve aligned with the EV tariffs on, which there’s been a response from China.

The Saskatchewan NDP is the only party in the Legislature that has been consistent in its calls to end the Chinese EV tariffs.
