SASK. PARTY PUTTING SENIORS AT RISK BY FAILING TO INSPECT, OVERSEE CARE HOMES

FORMER CARE HOME OPERATOR SAYS SHOCKING AUDITOR REPORT JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG
SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan NDP and a former care home operator are sounding the alarm on the state of seniors care in Saskatchewan, even beyond the Provincial Auditor’s report into the issue.
The Auditor found the Ministry failed to inspect special care homes, with many going without inspections for years, even after reporting critical incidents. Industry experts say there also is not sufficient oversight of personal care homes – smaller privately-run facilities.
Anita Bouvier is a former personal care home operator, trainer, client patient access services worker, and now manages a company that conducts care home assessments.
She says the provincial government’s personal care home regulations are woefully inadequate, and don’t even require in-person training for staff on dementia care, diabetes management, resident safety, and much more.
“Personal Care Home licensees and workers work hard every day to provide compassionate care, but the current provincial regulations do not reflect the reality of the residents they now serve,” said Bouvier. “Care workers deserve the training and support required to do their jobs effectively and safely.”
“When our parents or grandparents move into a home, we should have confidence that they will be safe and get the best possible care,” said Keith Jorgenson, Shadow Minister for Seniors. “We’ve seen too many tragedies on the news recently that could have been avoided.
“Saskatchewan should not be the wild west of unregulated care homes, but that’s what we’re getting after 18 years of this government.”
The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the Sask. Party government to adopt Bouvier’s petition to strengthen personal care homes and the Auditor’s recommendations to strengthen special care homes.
