SASK. PARTY PAYING EXTRA FOR BED-BUG INFESTED MOTEL ROOMS

Saskatchewan NDP Calls For Rundown Hotel To Be Removed From Locations Used To House Vulnerable People
REGINA – The Sask. Party government is putting vulnerable citizens up in deplorable, bedbug-infested motel rooms and paying extra for it.
CTV broke news earlier this week that social services clients temporarily housed at the Coachman Motor Inn in Regina are being subjected to bedbugs, cockroaches and drug dealers trying to push crystal meth.
“It’s shameful what the Sask. Party is doing to these vulnerable people,” said Brent Blakley, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Social Services.
“These people need help and this government has abandoned them. Eighteen years of this, people being neglected and forced into deplorable conditions when they deserve to live in dignity and safety.”
According to data released by the Ministry of Social Services, the Sask. Party government has consistently paid the Coachman $128 per room per night since 2022.
Rooms are advertised online for $85. Opposition researchers called the Coachman yesterday and were offered a room for $80, tax included.
In total, the Sask. Party government has paid the Coachman $243,940 from 2022 to 2024.
“For the rate the government is paying, there is no reason to put clients in this horrible motel,” said Blakley. “The Sask. Party should remove the Coachman from their list of social services accommodations immediately.
“Not only is this bad use of taxpayer dollars – it's downright cruel and no way to build a strong province for the future.”
