SASK. PARTY MLAS CHAN, CRASSWELLER BLOCK INVESTIGATION INTO SHADY SASKPOWER OVERSPEND

REGINA – The Sask. Party yesterday voted to block a special investigation that would have provided much-needed answers on the government’s decision to ram through $800 million in secret spending at SaskPower.

Sask. Party backbenchers – including Yorkton MLA David Chan and White City-Qu’Appelle MLA Brad Crassweller – used their majority on the committee to shut down Shadow Minister for SaskPower Aleana Young’s motion to have an independent, non-partisan investigation conducted by the provincial auditor.

“MLAs Chan and Crassweller owe their constituents an explanation,” said Young. “After 18 years in government, this Sask. Party is spending more and getting less. Power bills, debt, everything is going in the wrong direction just in time for Christmas.”
“I know MLAs Chan and MLA Crassweller are new to the job, but it shouldn’t take long to learn the difference between doing what’s right and doing what you’re told.
“They owe their constituents an explanation for this billion dollars in secret spending, and choosing party above province.”
MLA Young’s emergency motion follows on Minister Jeremy Harrison’s decision not to show up to a government-scheduled committee meeting on December 2, where he was expected to attend and answer questions about SaskPower’s sudden need for nearly a billion dollars.
After 18 years of Sask. Party mismanagement, the Crown corporation is projected to lose $166 million this year alone, and Saskatchewan people are expected to pay for it with – at least – a 10% power rate hike.
