“The Sask. Party has never found a tax they didn’t like,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Economy & Jobs. “First it was groceries, then kid’s clothing, construction labour, and carbon — now, it's the winter tires that Saskatchewan drivers rely on to keep their families safe.
“The Sask. Party Environment Minister needs to explain why he lied to the people of Saskatchewan about his tired, old tire tax, and then do a big, fat U-turn on this tax hike.”
According to AllSaskatchewan, the province’s tire tax charged on the purchase of tires in Saskatchewan is set to rise 30 per cent on Dec. 1 and is expected to cost drivers in the province $7 million annually.
“Fee increase decisions will be made by the board, based on analysis by management regarding the need, the amount, and the timing of the increase. The need for an increase will be discussed with the advisory committees to consider the impact and ensure proper justification. TSS will then approach the ministry for feedback and if a fee increase is needed to meet obligation under the PSP and remain sustainable, submit a request to the minister for approval and as a revision to the PSP.”
“It’s time to pump the brakes on this hike to the Sask. Party’s tired, old $7-million-per-year tire tax,” said Young. “Stop lying to the people of Saskatchewan. Stop the tax hike on winter tires.”
