SASK. PARTY LETTING SCHOOLS GO WITHOUT MUCH-NEEDED EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANTS

PRINCE ALBERT – The Saskatchewan NDP and education workers are calling on the Sask. Party government to restore critical supports for students by backfilling educational assistant positions being cut in Prince Albert.

"Educational assistants play a vital role in our classrooms supporting some of the most vulnerable children in our province,” said Matt Love, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Education.
“Our kids only get one shot at preparing for a bright future. Children in Prince Albert and across this province deserve equal access to education that meets their needs.”
“It is time now for all education workers in Saskatchewan to come together and raise concerns regarding the Jordan’s Principle funding cuts”, said Shandel McLeod, Vice-Chair of the Education Workers Steering Committee with CUPE Saskatchewan.
Earlier this year, school divisions in Saskatchewan — including Prince Albert — were forced to begin laying off educational assistants following changes to Jordan’s Principle funding.
Since then, the Sask. Party government has made no investment to restore and backfill the funding, leaving classrooms stretched thin and students at risk of falling behind.
“The Sask. Party should have reversed these cuts months ago, and they could reverse them today,” Love said.
“It’s not too late to bring back these hard-working educational assistants and start or kids off on the right foot this school year.
“Our kids are our future.”
