The decision comes on the heels of an earlier contract awarded to a U.S.-based company to process tires in southern Saskatchewan.
Both contracts were previously held by Shercom Industries, a Saskatchewan-based company that built a $20 million tire recycling facility north of Saskatoon, which remains shuttered. More than 90 good-paying jobs have been lost.
Saskatchewan NDP Highways and Infrastructure Shadow Minister Hugh Gordon says the Sask. Party’s decision to outsource Saskatchewan jobs is part of a troubling pattern.
“This government talks a big game about supporting local businesses, but the facts tell a different story,” said Gordon.
“They've handed our tire recycling industry over to companies from Ontario and the U.S., and locked a Saskatchewan business and dozens of workers out in the process.
“It’s bad for jobs, bad for the environment, bad for our economy, bad for the future growth and prosperity of our communities.”
Shercom has publicly stated they were not given a fair opportunity to compete for the renewed contracts they once held.
“A Saskatchewan-built, Saskatchewan-run facility is sitting idle while work that should be done here is being shipped out,” Gordon added. “This is exactly what happens when a government forgets who it’s supposed to be working for.”
The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on Sask. Party Environment Minister Travis Keisig to face reporters and explain why his government drove a local Saskatoon success story out of business.
