SASK PARTY FAILS TO GET FAIR DEAL FOR SASKATCHEWAN ON IMMIGRATION

Population Growth Stalls, People Continue To Leave For Other Provinces

REGINA – Recently announced immigration numbers show that the Sask. Party government has failed to secure fair treatment for Saskatchewan by the federal government.
“It’s ironic that the premier who brands himself on fighting for Saskatchewan against Ottawa can’t get a fair deal,” said Noor Burki, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Immigration.

Saskatchewan’s agreement only allows for 1,100 additional nominations through the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nomination Program (SINP). New Brunswick — which is barely two-thirds the size of Saskatchewan — secured an extra 1,500 nominations for the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program.

Manitoba has secured a two year extension for work permits in that province, while Saskatchewan has still failed to do so.

“Saskatchewan New Democrats are focused on the future and we want to see this province grow and thrive,” said Burki.

“But we need a fair deal on SINP allocations from Ottawa to reach our full potential. Failing to secure fair treatment on immigration puts our province’s future at risk, especially since our population growth has stalled and we lose thousands of people to other provinces each and every year.”

According to Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan’s population growth in the second quarter of 2025 was the lowest it’s been since the pandemic. Saskatchewan has lost more than 54,000 people through net interprovincial migration since Scott Moe came into office in 2018, losing people to other provinces for 28 consecutive quarters.
