SASK. PARTY CUTS TO SCHOOLS HURTING STUDENTS, JEOPARDIZING SASKATCHEWAN’S FUTURE: SURVEY

Ninety-Eight Per Cent Of Those Surveyed Report Harm From Underfunding Of K-12 Schools
REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is standing with education workers and demanding better support for students — Saskatchewan’s future — as a new survey makes it clear just how devastating Sask. Party cuts have been to public schools.
In all, 98 per cent of survey respondents for a CUPE report titled “Falling Through The Cracks” said their school divisions have been impacted by Sask. Party cuts over the past two years.
“What we are seeing is a government that has failed our students and the future of our province,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader. “After 18 years of the Sask. Party, our schools are underfunded, teachers and school staff are run off their feet, students are falling behind and don’t know where to turn for help.
“This has to change. These are our kids — every single one of them deserves a quality education and every opportunity to succeed.”
While education funding increased in most provinces between 2013 and 2023, Saskatchewan recorded a 15 per cent decrease in inflation-adjusted per-student funding. Compared to 2020, the province’s
classrooms have added 15,000 new students but with 86 fewer teachers.
Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Education Shadow Minister Matt Love and others joined CUPE education workers for a rally out front of the Legislature on Tuesday.
“Things are not improving — in fact, we hear from teachers and parents that public education is in worse shape than ever,” Love said. “There’s less support for individual students, larger class sizes and unacceptably long wait times for specialists like speech pathologists.”
Beck said school boards are cutting to the bone as per student operating funding lags behind inflation and behind the rest of the country.
“Saskatchewan, we don’t have to settle for this,” Beck said. “We can build a bright future for every student, where they can get a good education, then a good job and raise their family right here. That’s what I want for your kids and for the future of Saskatchewan.”
