SASK. PARTY BACKS MLA WHO SPREAD HATEFUL COMMENTS, CAUSED PAIN IN SIKH COMMUNITY

MLA Grewal Calls for Hilbert to be Removed from Government Caucus

REGINA - Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are refusing to condemn and take meaningful action in response to deeply harmful comments made by their own Humboldt-Watrous MLA Racquel Hilbert, who deemed the leader of a federal political party a “terrorist.”

“These were comments written out in advance — this was premeditated hate,” said Vicki Mowat, Saskatchewan NDP Deputy Leader. “This Legislature belongs to the people of Saskatchewan — and the Sask. Party government was elected to serve the people of Saskatchewan.

“Now, members of Saskatchewan’s Sikh community are shocked, hurt and scared by the comments made by that member — and the Premier refuses to do a thing.”

Hilbert did issue an apology Wednesday but only after the comments surfaced in the media.

“I have been talking to my fellow community members nonstop since these hateful comments emerged — there have been many tears and a great deal of devastation,” said Tajinder Grewal, a proud Sikh and Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Saskatoon-University Sutherland.

“Calling someone a terrorist simply for being Sikh is hate speech and does so much harm.
“Members of the community are asking me why does an MLA who spread such hate continue to sit in the Government Caucus?”

Grewal also urged the Sask. Party to support immediate passage of a bill introduced by Bhajan Brar, Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Regina Pasqua, that would permanently recognize April as Sikh Heritage Month in Saskatchewan.
