SASK. NDP HONOURS FIRST FIRST NATIONS WOMAN ELECTED TO THE SASKATCHEWAN LEGISLATURE

REGINA – Today, the Saskatchewan NDP held a reception at the legislature to honour Joan Beatty, the first First Nations woman ever elected to the Saskatchewan legislature, recognizing her leadership and the doors she opened for future generations.
Beatty was first elected in 2003 and again in 2007 representing the Saskatchewan NDP in the constituency of Cumberland, serving as Minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation and Provincial Secretary. Prior to entering politics, Beatty was a journalist with the CBC working in Regina and in the northwest territories as a national reporter. She is a member of the Peter Ballantyne First Nation and currently lives in Deschambault Lake where she services on the Deschambault Police Board as an inter-provincial advisor to protect the northern fisheries.
"Today we honour a woman who pushed through barriers that were never designed to include them. Joan Beatty showed every young First Nations girl in Saskatchewan that their voice belongs in these halls of power,” said Saskatchewan NDP MLA Betty Nippi-Albright from the Kinistin First Nation. “Her courage and determination didn’t just make history—she changed what is possible for all of us."
"Joan’s election marked an essential chapter in Saskatchewan’s political history. Her presence in the Legislature advanced representation and ensured that Indigenous women’s experiences, voices, and wisdom helped shape decisions that affect us all," said Jacqueline Roy, NDP Shadow Minister for Status of Women.
