SASK. NDP, FIRST RESPONDERS CALL FOR PROVINCIAL MEDAL HONOURING FALLEN HEROES

MCLEOD FINALLY U-TURNS ON ISSUE UNDER PRESSURE FROM DOZENS OF FIRST RESPONDERS
REGINA — The Saskatchewan NDP and a decorated first responder have successfully pressured the Sask. Party government to create a new provincial medal that honours first responders who die in the line of duty or from work-related injuries after months of advocacy
David Reed and dozens of firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel stood with the Saskatchewan NDP at the Legislature today to pressure the Sask. Party to change its position on the issue.
Minister Tim McLeod had previously refused to adopt the medal, opting instead for a monument, but today buckled under pressure and flip flopped.
“I’m so glad that months of advocacy has finally paid off, but it should not have taken this long,” said Nicole Sarauer, Saskatchewan NDP Policing, Corrections and Public Safety Shadow Minister. “It should not have taken dozens of first responders visiting the Legislature to pressure the minister for him to act.
“Families who’ve lost loved ones in the line of duty deserve personal recognition from the province in a medal. Nothing less will do.”
Reed’s campaign has earned the formal backing of key first responder groups, including the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers, the Paramedic Services Chiefs of Saskatchewan, and the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police.
