SASK. NDP CALLS FOR RELEASE OF CHINA TRADE DOCUMENTS

PROVINCIAL AUDITOR SAYS SASK. PARTY FAILING TO MANAGE TRADE OFFICES
SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on Scott Moe and his Ministers to come clean with producers and release records showing what, if anything, their trade office has done over the last six months as China stacked up job-killing tariffs on Saskatchewan exports.
In June, the Provincial Auditor criticized the Sask. Party government for not having clear goals or performance measures for its international trade offices. Despite the mounting crisis, Moe has not visited China to strengthen relationships in six years.
“The canola tariffs are one of the biggest issues facing our province right now. We need our trade offices and our government firing on all cylinders. Producers rightly deserve to know what the Premier has done to try to fix them, and what goals he’s set for his China mission,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader.
“It took six months of job-killing tariffs for Moe to finally get up off his seat and consider launching this trade mission. Tariffs have only gotten worse, and our producers rightly deserve to know that their government has made removing them a top priority.”
Saskatchewan merchandise exports to China have already plummeted by 25.6 per cent during the first six months of the year, and by 51.2 per cent from June 2024 to June 2025, according to Statistics Canada.
Up until last week, Moe maintained that lobbying the Chinese was a job only for the federal government, not his government.
“Canola is key to the future of our economy,” said Beck. “We can’t afford to set the bar low.”
