REGINA HOSPITAL EMPLOYS MASS-CASUALTY STRATEGY TO DEAL WITH EXTREME OVERCROWDING

REGINA – The Regina General Hospital was so overcrowded yesterday that staff were forced to employ Code Orange strategies reserved for mass casualty events. 

According to sources, available staff were called in, patients were placed in recliner chairs and temporary beds were set up in hallways due to a lack of available beds in the Emergency Department. As well, rural and primary healthcare sites were considered to help take the pressure off. 

Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Health Vicki Mowat said that this was the culmination of 17 years of Sask. Party mismanagement. 

“Our province used to lead the nation in healthcare. Now we’re in last place. We need a plan to address the crisis in our healthcare and build it back up for the future.” 

“We need more doctors, more nurses, more lab techs, more healthcare workers, not more bureaucracy,” added Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Rural and Remote Health.  

“All the Sask. Party has done is beef up the bureaucracy and put band-aid solutions on problems.” 

The Sask. Party promised that their Capacity Pressure Action Plan would fix the issues at Regina’s hospitals, but things have only gotten worse.
