PATIENTS BEING TREATED IN MOULD-INFESTED INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AT ROYAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Carla Beck’s Team Demands Immediate Remediation After Disgusting Photos Emerge
SASKATOON – Carla Beck’s team is demanding Scott Moe and the Sask. Party come clean on the state of disgust inside a Saskatoon hospital and lay out a clear emergency plan to improve conditions before more patients are put at risk.

Shocking images leaked to Beck’s team this week reveal mould growing on the windows inside Royal University Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. The images include a warning written to employees about the mould and an indication that a request to clean it up had been put in two weeks prior.

Beck’s team is also calling for an independent review of the state of conditions inside RUH.

“First, its patients being treated in hallways and the reception area, and now, if they’re fortunate enough to get a room, they are receiving lifesaving care while breathing in mould,” said Keith Jorgenson, Associate Shadow Minister for Health.
“The Sask. Party claims they’ve got a plan to put patients first. Really?”

"All it takes is one walk through our hospitals and you’ll find mould growing in the rooms of our sickest patients — it’s disgusting and horrific.

“This is the direct result of 20 years of Sask. Party failures that have left healthcare in our province in worse shape than ever,” Jorgenson added.

RUH has constantly been at or overcapacity for years as the Sask. Party has failed to properly staff hospitals and provide enough beds to ensure patient care. Photos have emerged from the hospital several times of patients being left in agony in hallways and even the reception area for days.

Jorgenson demanded an immediate confirmation of the mould from Saskatchewan Health Authority officials, a commitment for a full review from an independent firm of the cleanliness standards inside Royal University Hospital and a formal apology from Scott Moe and Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill for subjecting patients to such unacceptable conditions.

“Families and healthcare workers have a right to know that their workplace is mould-free, especially in a publicly funded hospital,” said Jorgenson. “I want Scott Moe to show his face today and apologize to the people who have passed through that hospital to receive healthcare and for the workers doing their very best every day in unimaginable conditions.”

Carla Beck’s team is consulting healthcare professionals, experts and everyday people about the future of Saskatchewan healthcare — everyone is welcome to get involved at YourCareYourSay.ca

“I want every patient and healthcare worker in this province to know that it doesn't have to be like this — we can have a healthcare system where mould doesn’t grow on hospital windows, where you have access to a family doctor, and where you can rely on your emergency room being open.

“It’s clearly time for change.”
