MOOSE JAW WILL BENEFIT GREATLY FROM CARLA BECK’S GRID & GROWTH PLAN

Scott Moe’s Can’t-Quit-Coal Plan Is Highest Cost, Highest Risk Option For Struggling Saskatchewan Families, Farms & Businesses
MOOSE JAW — Carla Beck’s team has a plan to deliver affordable, reliable power for Moose Jaw families and businesses — and those right across Saskatchewan.

Jobs, Economy & SaskPower Shadow Minister Aleana Young was in Moose Jaw today to hear directly from residents already feeling the sting of rising electricity costs and to present the Beck plan to deliver affordable, reliable power.

The Saskatchewan NDP’s Grid and Growth Plan would phase out coal on schedule, build reliable natural gas, invest in transmission, expand lower-cost renewables and keep nuclear on the table for the future. Independent analysis shows it would lower costs increases, reduce risk, cut reliance on imports and generate more than $33 billion in economic activity.

“This is about priorities,” Young said. “Right now, this government is choosing the most expensive path and asking Saskatchewan people to pay for it.

“The Sask. Party’s plan will double your bills, at a minimum. We don’t have to do that. We can lower costs. We can reduce risk. We can build a system that actually works for people. The only thing standing in the way is a government that refuses to change course. That’s why it’s time for change.”

Independent modelling done for Carla Beck’s team shows the government’s approach ranks as the highest-cost, highest-risk option available to the province — with the potential to add up to $35 billion in debt while pushing power bills even higher.

“People in Moose Jaw are already feeling the pressure of rising power bills, and they’re right to expect a better future,” said Young. “The longer this government clings to this expensive scheme, the more people pay.”

SaskPower documents filed with the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel show it will cost another $2.6 billion — nearly triple an earlier estimate from Jeremy Harrison — just to keep aging coal plants running, while the utility is asking for back-to-back rate hikes of nearly four per cent in 2026 and 2027.

The visit to Moose Jaw is part of a broader push to take the Grid & Growth Plan directly to communities feeling the pressure of rising costs and to make clear there is a better option.
