MOE WILL SLAP SASKATOON WITH A MAJOR HIKE IN POWER RATES TOO

As Sask. Party Runs SaskPower Into The Ground, Crown Raises Rates For Resellers Like Saskatoon Light & Power
SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan NDP says it’s just a matter of time before Saskatoon residents, like those across the rest of the province. are hit with another increase in power rates.

Page 54 of SaskPower’s application to the rate review panel includes the same increase for resellers like Saskatoon Light & Power that are being faced by people across the province. Much of Saskatoon relies on Light & Power to keep the lights.

“Saskatoon residents who were hoping they would dodge Scott Moe’s power-rate hike are about to be hit when they can least afford it. When it comes to raising costs and squeezing families, Scott Moe leaves no stone unturned,” said Sask. NDP Leader Carla Beck.

During Question Period on Dec. 6, Deputy Leader Vicki Mowat repeatedly asked the Premier whether power rates were going up given SaskPower’s worsening financial situation, the result of unprecedented financial mismanagement by the Sask. Party.

Moe’s responded: “There has been no discussion on this side of the house with respect to hiking power rates.”

Less than a month later, SaskPower announced it had applied for a 3.9 per cent increase in both 2026 and 2027.

“Scott Moe looked Saskatchewan people straight in the eye and said power rate hikes weren’t being discussed — that was a lie,” said Beck. “Now, families in Saskatoon and across the province are staring down higher bills at a time they can least afford it. People deserve honesty, accountability and a government focused on making their life more affordable, not jacking up rates.

In total, Saskatchewan will pay $135.9 million more on their power bills by next year, something the responsible Minister Jeremy Harrison described as a “modest” increase. SaskPower is forecasted to pay $551 million this year just to cover the interest on its debt.

“Families are already stretched to the breaking point, and now the government wants them to cover the cost of ballooning debt and bad decisions. This rate hike isn’t inevitable — it’s the direct result of choices Scott Moe and Jeremy Harrison made,” said Aleana Young, NDP Shadow Minister for SaskPower.

“The Saskatchewan NDP is here today on behalf of ratepayers in Saskatoon and right across Saskatchewan demanding this government pull their power-rate hike.

“It’s time to make life more affordable — it’s time for change.”
