During a Friday news conference, Moe was asked point blank about discussion in Alberta — being fueled by his friend Premier Danielle Smith — about holding a referendum on separating from Canada. The Premier said he “won't go so far as to comment on a Western secession crisis at this time."
“Let me help Scott Moe — the answer is no,” said Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck. “We’re not breaking up the country. The people of Saskatchewan are Canadian, and we will remain Canadians.
“We certainly have concerns with policies from Ottawa spanning decades that have harmed our province — equalization, the carbon tax and more; however, we should be working to build up Saskatchewan and Canada together, creating good jobs and driving economic growth in the process.
“Pitting us against each other is exactly what Donald Trump wants, so he can pick us off one by one.”
Trump has repeatedly declared that Canada should be the 51st state and Republican insiders have said a move to absorb the country could begin in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Moe and Sask. Party Minister of Health Jeremy Cockrill are due to speak at the Canada Strong and Free Network’s National Conference in Ottawa later this week. The network’s founder, Preston Manning, recently published an op-ed in the Globe & Mail declaring that the results of the federal election could spur a Western secession crisis.
“First, the Premier leaves the door open to leaving Canada — and then he jets off to the capital to play footsie with those fueling this ridiculous discussion,” said Sally Housser, Sask. NDP Shadow Minister for Energy & Resources. “There’s a big difference between the West wants in and the West wants out.”
“The Saskatchewan NDP is focused on the future and diversifying our markets to get our products to ports on the east and west coasts. How does the premier think this type of nonsense helps accomplish that?”
