MOE AND SASK. PARTY CONTINUE TO FLY HIGH ON THE PUBLIC DIME

Sask. Party booking luxury $800/night hotel rooms when travelling

REGINA – This week, the Sask. Party government quietly released their out-of-province ministerial travel costs showing that Scott Moe still has a taste for the finer things in life after his million-dollar trip to Dubai.

The disclosure shows that, from June 11-13, the Premier and three other staff members flew to Toronto and charged taxpayers $818.74 a night each.

“I’d ask the people of Saskatchewan this: when was the last time you spent $800 a night on a hotel room?” said Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Ethics and Democracy.

“We’re in a cost-of-living crisis and this Sask. Party government continues to deny the realities of Saskatchewan families. This Sask Party government has voted down every single piece of affordability relief proposed by the Saskatchewan NDP, from help with gas to groceries, but they don’t blink an eye charging taxpayers $800 a night for a fancy hotel to pamper themselves. It’s just ridiculous.”

Comparable rates of Downtown Toronto Hotels near the convention centre & CN Tower for the night of November 29, with one-day notice:

  • Holiday Inn Express (3-Stars) – $362.99
  • InterContinental Toronto Centre (4-Stars) – $362.80
  • Toronto Marriott City Centre (4-Stars) – $311.43
  • Hilton Toronto (4-Stars) – $346.16
  • The Germain (4-Stars) – $406.05
  • Fairmont Royal York (5-Stars) – $343.89
  • The St. Regis (5-Stars) – $748.63
  • The Ritz Carlton (5-Stars) – $838.46

This isn’t the first time Sask. Party members have been caught wining and dining on the public dime. Last March, limo logs received through an access of information request revealed a Sask. Party Minister was sightseeing through Paris in a taxpayer-funded chauffeured Mercedes rather than attending a conference – as his public schedule stated he was doing.

“People have had enough of politicians telling them to tighten their belts while they spend lavishly with taxpayer dollars,” said Conway. “This kind of reckless spending by Sask. Party ministers while blocking any and all immediate affordability relief for hard-hit families struggling with rising costs just shows how out of touch these guys really are.”
