MARSHALS REFUSE TO MAKE PUBLIC FILES RELATED TO MISCONDUCT INVESTIGATION

Only 28 of 290 Pages Released in Apparent Cover-Up
REGINA - The Marshals Service and Moe’s Minister responsible for them, Michael Weger, continue to withhold information involving a provincial marshal who quit his job after an investigation by the Public Complaints Commission.

Despite an order from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner stating the public has a right to know why a provincial Marshal was placed on leave and investigated, the Marshals Service today released just 28 of the 290 pages — and even those contained few details about the investigation.

“I am very disappointed that Minister Weger continues to refuse to step in and release these documents,” said Nicole Sarauer, Shadow Minister for Policing, Corrections and Community Safety.

The Commissioner ruled in her March report that “the public interest in this matter is considerable... The public has a right to know and debate the outcome of allegations involving a marshal who is appointed to act in the public trust when allegations arise otherwise.”

“I spent 24 years in policing, and when there were allegations of misconduct, we disclosed them — period,” said Hugh Gordon, Deputy Shadow Minister for Policing, Corrections and Community Safety. “That’s how you maintain public trust.

What we see here is an order to be more transparent with the public, and instead we get scraps covered in black ink.

“As someone who has proudly worn a uniform for decades, I can say with confidence that the Minister’s decision to hide these documents hurts all of the proud, upstanding officers in this province who work day in and day out to maintain the confidence and the trust of the public.”

Carla Beck’s team continues to call on Moe’s Minister for the Marshals to release the documents.
