At this weekend’s Saskatchewan NDP Convention, former Sask. Party MLA and Speaker Randy Weekes told media that two camps are forming – one group loyal to Moe trying to fend off a leadership review and another actively calling Sask. Party members asking them to attend the party’s annual convention in a few weeks and help to remove him as Leader.
“I think under Scott Moe, you know, the internal bickering that you’re seeing behind the scenes about his leadership and the Sask. Party’s having the convention coming up in November – there's an all-out war in the party,” Weekes told reporters.
“Moe and his people are trying to get people to go to the convention to vote in favor of his leadership and there's MLAs, former cabinet ministers, that are actively phoning around to get people to go to the convention to vote no to his leadership so I think that's a big distraction within the Saskatchewan Party government because of the leadership uncertainty and so that’s going to be interesting to see how that turns out.”
During the last provincial election, the Sask. Party lost 14 seats to the Saskatchewan NDP.
Weekes was a Sask. Party MLA for 25 years until May 2024 when he ripped up his Sask. Party membership, alleging bullying and harassment from cabinet ministers.
Weekes told media he doesn’t believe Moe will run in the next election.
“I don't think he has any intention of running in the next election, which begs the question: why is he going into a convention? Why didn't he announce that he was not going to be there for another election? I think that's part of really the personal agenda that's going on with Scott Moe and the people around him.”
Over the weekend, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck received a resounding mandate from delegates at the party’s largest convention in over twenty years.
