HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS IN EVERY SASKATOON NEIGHBOURHOOD AFTER 18 YEARS OF SASK. PARTY

SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Fire Department reports that homeless encampments have popped up in every Saskatoon neighbourhood after 18 years of Sask. Party government.

The Fire Department has counted 1,248 encampments as of September 1 and has intervened to clear 357 of them. All of last year, crews cleared 218 encampments.

“Homelessness is out of control and the Sask. Party isn’t treating this like the crisis it is,” said Vicki Mowat, Saskatchewan NDP Deputy Leader.

“These tent cities are the result of Sask. Party 18 years of failure — failure to make life affordable, create good jobs, stop the flow of drugs, build more housing and keep taxes low.

“The Sask. Party has had 18 years, and this problem is only getting worse and worse.”

According to the Point in Time reports, homelessness in Saskatoon has almost tripled, going from 550 in 2022 to 1,499 last year.

Data for 2025 is expected to be provided later this year.

“We used to be the place where everyone had a safe place to call home. Where everyone felt safe in their own community,” said April ChiefCalf, Saskatchewan NDP Housing Shadow Minister.

“This isn’t just about our downtowns anymore. This is about every community in our city. We need action to end homelessness now so we can all have a bright future.”
