FORMER SPEAKER SAYS HE TRIED TO STOP SUBLET SCANDAL

Randy Weekes Calls For ‘Trust, Accountability, Transparency and Honour To Be Restored To Saskatchewan Politics’
SASKATOON — In the wake of damning comments from a former Speaker, Carla Beck’s team is again calling for a full disclosure of all documents and testimony from Scott Moe and his Minister on what actions they took, what they knew and when they knew it concerning the growing Sublet Scandal

On Wednesday, Randy Weekes disputed claims from Scott Moe’s Minister Ken Cheveldayoff that he had been given approval by three previous Speakers for the subletting arrangement he had with his taxpayer-funded office — a clear breach of the rules that carried on for nearly eight years despite being told to stop.

“I would like to make clear, while I was Speaker, this situation was brought to my attention,” Weekes said. “I did not approve, in fact, I fully endorsed and approved steps to be taken to rectify this violation of the rules by the Legislative officer.”

Weekes also vouched full support for a call from Carla Beck’s team Wednesday for a full investigation into the scandal by the Conflict-of-Interest Commissioner and said he would testify if called upon.

“The former Speaker says he tried to put a stop to this subletting scandal, and nothing happened — why?” said Jordan McPhail, Ethics & Democracy Shadow Minister. “This whole thing stinks. The Minister has been an elected official for two decades. He knew what he was doing was wrong, and it is shameful that he got away with it for so long.

“We again are calling for full transparency from Scott Moe, his Minister and for a full investigation into this matter.”

Photos taken previously by Carla Beck’s team in November 2025 show that Cheveldayoff’s Centre Avenue office was listed for lease in the fall. Those signs have since been removed.

“The story keeps changing,” McPhail said. “First, everything was above board, according to the Minister. Then, it was fine under some Speakers but not this new Speaker, and then he claimed he was looking for a new office.

“The Minister won’t speak to reporters; we aren’t allowed to ask these questions in the House — what is Scott Moe hiding here?”
