FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT MONTH, SASKATCHEWAN HAS HIGHEST RENT INCREASE IN CANADA

Sask. Party Fails To Get A Deal On National Housing Project
SASKATOON – For the seventh month in a row, Saskatchewan had the highest rent increase in Canada while nationally rents declined for the eleventh straight month.
And, to make matters worse, a new federal program meant to increase housing supply won't help Saskatchewan one bit as both the Sask. Party and Federal Government fail to address the growing housing crisis in the province.
According to the September 2025 Rentals.ca Rent Report, provincial rents increased 4 per cent in September compared to a 2.3 per cent national decline. Saskatoon saw rent increase 6.4 per cent.
“We need rent control and we need all levels of government working together to increase our housing supply,” said April ChiefCalf, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Housing. “It’s getting harder to own a home and keep up with rising rents, and it’s in large part a result of bad choices from our governments.”
Over the weekend, the federal government announced its intention to build 4,000 more homes across the country with the National Housing Project. Saskatchewan was not included on the list of future projects.
“Scott Moe and the Sask. Party should have been pushing Ottawa for action on this monumental crisis for years,” said ChiefCalf. “The fact that we’ve been excluded from this list shows how little the Sask. Party cares about fixing the housing and homelessness crisis they created over 18 years.”
“I want a future where people can afford to live with dignity, and not get their rents jacked up 20, sometimes 30 per cent by a big corporate landlord from Alberta,” added ChiefCalf.
Four provinces — including Doug Ford’s Ontario — have already implemented rent control measures to protect tenants and keep rents affordable.
The Saskatchewan NDP is collecting public input on RentControlNow.ca as it prepares to introduce legislation this fall to get the skyrocketing cost of rent under control.
