FACT CHECK: WHY THE SASK. PARTY’S WILDFIRE INVESTIGATION DOES NOT GO FAR ENOUGH

An independent inquiry under the Public Inquiries Act is fundamentally different than the private study the Sask. Party has commissioned.

An independent inquiry would be genuinely independent of the government and could be led by a former judge.
The judge would be empowered to hold public tribunals and subpoena members of the Cabinet and senior leaders of government agencies responsible for the wildfire response.
The list of Sask. Party failures is long and not all of them are being examined by the government, Auditor or Ombudsman.
Wildfire evacuees continue to question:
  • why many of their neighbours were forced to go, and continue to go, without financial supports;
  • why half of the government's water bomber fleet was grounded during the height of the wildfires;
  • why federal support, including military support, was left on the table as communities burned.
If the Sask Party really has nothing to hide, they should agree to a genuine public inquiry.
