DENARE BEACH DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY AFTER WILDFIRE DEVASTATION

McPhail, Community push for urgent action and lasting support

DENARE BEACH – Today, the Saskatchewan NDP stood alongside local leaders and nearly two hundred residents of Denare Beach to demand answers and immediate action from the Sask. Party government, after wildfires tore through the community.

“The people of Denare Beach stepped up in every way to protect their homes and each other. Sadly, we didn’t see that same commitment from the Sask. Party government,” said Jordan McPhail, NDP MLA for Cumberland.

“Our firefighters, pilots and engineers, and local leaders did everything they could with the limited tools they had. But the warnings from the ground were ignored, and repeated requests for help and resources were denied.”

“Scott Moe and his government must answer why they didn’t show up for this community then and still haven’t now.”

Residents and local leaders say the Sask. Party ignored clear warnings, and failed to follow through on promised firefighting support, and is now working at a “snail’s pace” to rebuild the community.

“Our provincial government abandoned us when we needed them most,” said Jennifer Hysert, a Denare Beach resident. “We can’t go back in time — but we can demand that no community is ever abandoned like this ever again. We need help now, and we need change for the future.”

Just across the border, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew requested federal military assistance and quickly delivered financial support for evacuees. In Saskatchewan, the Sask. Party refused to request federal help and has yet to deliver financial aid to many of those displaced in Denare Beach.

McPhail reiterated his call for the government to be transparent, take responsibility, and commit to rebuilding this community for the future.
