CLOSING COMMUNITY HEALTH CLINIC IS MORE PROOF SASKATCHEWAN HEALTHCARE GOING IN WRONG DIRECTION

Doctor Shortage Cited As Sask. Party Fails to Recruit Frontline Healthcare Workers to Province
REGINA – A new community health clinic in Regina once heralded by the Sask. Party as the future of healthcare is now closing its doors.
Late last month, patients were notified that Gardens Community Health Centre is set to close Nov. 30. In a letter, the clinic said it “cannot secure sufficient physician staffing.”
“Doctors are leaving the profession or the province altogether after 18 years of Sask. Party mismanagement,” said Jared Clarke, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Rural and Remote Health.
“This is exactly what happens when you shift decision-making and resources away from the frontline healthcare workers and give it to the politicians and bureaucrats in the Legislature.
“The Sask. Party has a choice. They can step up right here and right now and do everything in their power to keep this health centre open in two months’ time — or they can fail the people of Saskatchewan yet again.”
A job posting on SaskDocs for two full-time family doctors at Gardens has been open for more than 10 months. There were 291 vacant postings on SaskDocs provincewide as of yesterday, many of them for multiple positions.
“We need big bold change to get Saskatchewan healthcare out of last place,” Clarke said.
“Saskatchewan people deserve a future where healthcare is available when and where they need it.”
