CHILDCARE DIRECTOR SAYS MINISTRY IGNORING WORKERS IN SCATHING LETTER

Advisory Committee Would Ensure Minister Listens To Providers
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe’s Minister responsible for childcare, Everett Hindley, after a childcare director issued a scathing letter stating that the government is ignoring the concerns of the people who work in the childcare sector.

“These are the people who keep our childcare system running,” said Joan Pratchler, Shadow Minister for Childcare. “When experienced directors say they feel ignored, disrespected, and shut out, that is a failure of leadership from Scott Moe and the Sask. Party.”

Kelly Swayze, Director of Carnduff Community Daycare, warned in the letter that the government’s approach has created financial and operational blind spots, leading to staffing shortages and growing instability across the sector. Many programs are now relying on tens of thousands of dollars in annual fundraising just to stay open.

The letter, addressed to the Ministry of Education’s Early Years Branch, reveals years of frustration from frontline experts excluded from decision-making despite managing childcare programs every day, leaving some feeling “disrespected, discouraged, and unheard.”

Swayze is calling on the Minister to create an advisory committee of childcare providers so the experts on the frontline have a seat at the table.

“We want this agreement to succeed,” said Swayze. “We want to be the ones who help you solve the staffing crisis, who help streamline the under-utilized spaces and who ensure that no parent is left with a bill they can’t pay because of a technicality.

“We have the data, we have the experience, and most importantly, we have the heart. ... We are asking for a seat at the table that our expertise has earned.”

“It’s so important that we get $10-a-day childcare right,” Pratchler added. “We can’t do that unless the government actually starts listening to the people who work in this sector.

“After 20 years in government, the Sask. Party has grown tired and out of touch. They aren’t listening to anyone. It’s time for change.”
