CARLA BECK’S TEAM INTRODUCES BILL TO BLOCK SNITCH LINES TARGETING HEALTHCARE WORKERS

Legislation Aims to Protect Frontline Workers Who Speak Out About Worsening Hospital Conditions
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team has introduced legislation to stop so-called “snitch lines” from being set up inside the Sask. Party-run Saskatchewan Health Authority in an attempt to intimidate and silence frontline healthcare workers.

The private member’s bill, Bill 618, The Provincial Health Authority (Prohibiting Anonymous Reporting Mechanisms) Amendment Act, would stop plans by the Sask. Party to create an anonymous reporting system that makes staff think twice before speaking openly about conditions in the healthcare system.

“Tell the truth, get reported. That’s the spy-and-snitch culture the provincial health authority, which is largely run by Scott Moe’s buddies, intends to create,” said Nathaniel Teed, Labour Shadow Minister, who introduced the bill.

“Instead of fixing a healthcare system that is literally collapsing all around us, Scott Moe and his ministers are going after the very workers holding healthcare together. We are calling on him to stop this garbage today and pass this legislation."

Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill has defended the proposed snitch line as a ‘tool’ despite growing concern from frontline staff. The SHA tried introducing a similar "whistleblower hotline" in 2019 but backed down in the face of public pressure.

“The last thing a hospital needs is a culture where people look over their shoulder before doing what’s right,” Teed said. “That’s how problems get buried and patients pay the price. Frontline healthcare workers need a lifeline, not a snitch line.

“It’s time for change.”

Saskatchewan’s healthcare system is buckling under pressure with long emergency room wait times, delayed access to surgeries, hallway care, and rural emergency room closures.

The proposed legislation is part of a broader effort by Carla Beck’s team to deliver big, bold change in Saskatchewan healthcare. People are encouraged to get involved at YourCareYourSay.ca.
